Description: In her night school class, Elly says that as a writer she needs to be an entertainer, especially in newspaper reporting. She's been an avid subscriber to the daily newspaper since they got the dog.
Caption: Let's see... how old is the dog...

Lynn's Notes: I do feel that a writer must also be an entertainer. This is why there is structure in a sentence, and cadence in dialogue. I soon discovered that poetry is an essential ingredient in writing- especially as it applies to comic strips wherein the reader has less than 30 seconds to visually ingest an idea. Any "speed bump" in the writing has to be smoothed out. If the punch line here was, for example; "Let me think, now.....when did we decide to get a dog?" the cadence would be interrupted and the last line less effective.

Lynn's Notes: Dundas is a small suburb of Hamilton, Ontario where I lived for about 4 years. I would go to the Dundas Valley Journal and see if they needed any cartoons and, eventually, they bought a weekly panel from me for $10.00 apiece. Elly and her quest for a column in her local paper was based on this.

Description: The editor of the Valley Voice newspaper asks Elly to tackle their Library Corner. She thinks it might not be much of a challenge but Elly is very excited about the assignment.

Lynn's Notes: Having Elly do a regular column posed the question: "about what should she write?" Since she was an avid reader (with little time to read) a column about books and local library news would be right up her alley. This was also something I could easily research. I looked forward to talking to our library staff and finding out what THEIR jobs were like.

Lynn's Notes: When The Dundas Valley Journal accepted my first cartoons, I was thrilled. To see my work in print in a local paper was wonderful. For a while, I did this for free and it was one of the best learning experiences. I was working at a packaging company in town, freelancing for McMaster University as well as doing cartoons for the DVJ. As far as an education in graphic arts goes, this was a course well worth taking.

Lynn's Notes: As a young artist trying to get freelance work anywhere I could, I often found myself doing things for clients who offered to pay me, but when it came time to do so, had no money. It was hard to defend myself against such people, so I just kept producing and taking my lumps. I did a lot of illustration for a small local publisher when I was young. When I pleaded with him to pay me the money he owed me, he said I should be happy just to see my work in print!

Lynn's Notes: The Arbuckle family lived next door to us on Fifth and Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Their dog, Teddy, was a stoic old guy -- trained to follow the footpaths in the garden and to walk alongside his master without a leash. Still, he was always up for a barking session when Alan and I teased him through the fence, which separated our two wartime houses. George Arbuckle worked in the shipyards and was away most days -- even on weekends. Mrs A. spent no time with Teddy, and so our teasing was a welcome diversion from pacing the backyard. Teddy barked at us for all he was worth and seemed to enjoy every minute of it. We did not have a tape recorder but managed to bark back at him in such a way that it sounded like several dogs all barking at once. It was a compliment, therefore, to hear from the neighbours on the other side of the street that there had been a pack of dogs behind the Arbuckle house and something should be done about it. Thus, the Ridgway kids made the "news" again.
